Frequently asked questions

Questions from the crowd

Is this a band name generator?

No. Every name in the library was written by a real person, and there are thousands of them. Press Next act and you get one at random. Nobody ran them through a computer or an AI, so they're funny in ways a generator can't manage.

Are these funny band names or real ones?

Mostly funny. People send in the worst, weirdest names they can think of. Some turn out to be good, and plenty would suit a punk, emo, or psych rock band. One person's joke is another person's debut album.

How do I add my own band name?

Press Submit a name: it's in the bar at the bottom on a phone and in the left panel on a computer. A real person reads every name before it goes on the site. Funny ones make it in. Names that are only there to be hateful don't.

Are there short names as well as long ones?

Yes. Some are one word, some are a whole sentence. Next act picks from all of them, so you never know what's coming.

Can I use a name for my own band?

Go for it. Every name sent in joins the library, and you're free to use any of them for a real band. The library as a whole belongs to the site, so please don't copy it wholesale. The terms have the details.

How do I check if a band name is already taken?

We don't check trademarks, Spotify, or anywhere else. Before you print the T-shirts, search the streaming sites and domain names to make sure nobody got there first.

Why do some names score below zero?

An up vote adds one and a down vote takes one away. The Worst 10 are the names people voted down the most. Down there, a low score is a badge of honour: being the worst is as hard as being the best.

Is there anything for metal, punk, or K-pop?

Every genre turns up: death metal, grunge, indie folk, and K-pop groups that should never have been formed. People send in all of it, and Next act pulls from the lot.

Can I use these for a D&D party or a fantasy band?

Yes. Plenty of them would suit a bard's troupe or the band in the corner of the tavern. Keep pressing Next act until one fits.

Do the names work for a duo, a solo act, or a producer tag?

Most do. Few names say how many people are in the band, so they work as well for a solo producer, a duo, or a hip hop crew as for a five-piece.
